Elections in
Alabama holds its 2026 midterm elections on November 3, with primary elections scheduled for May 19. This cycle features 88 races across federal, statewide, and state legislative offices. Voters will decide on all seven statewide constitutional offices, including Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, and Treasurer, as well as all seven of Alabama's U.S. House seats.
The Alabama Legislature is also on the ballot, with 72 state legislative races including contests for the State Senate and State House. Alabama operates with closed party primaries, meaning voters must choose to participate in either the Republican or Democratic primary. Runoff elections, if necessary when no candidate receives a majority, are typically held several weeks after the primary.
This election cycle provides Alabama voters the opportunity to shape both state governance and federal representation for the next term. With races spanning from local legislative districts to statewide executive offices, the 2026 midterms represent a comprehensive electoral decision point for the state.

To vote in Alabama, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old by Election Day, a resident of Alabama, and not disqualified due to a disqualifying felony conviction (unless rights have been restored). Voters can register online, by mail, or in person at their county Board of Registrars office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, or other designated locations. The voter registration deadline is 15 days before any election.
Alabama requires voters to present valid photo identification at the polls. Acceptable forms include an Alabama driver's license, Alabama non-driver ID, Alabama photo voter ID card (available free from county registrars), U.S. passport, federal or state government-issued ID, U.S. military ID, student or employee ID from an Alabama college or university, tribal document, or certain other government documents. Early voting (called "absentee voting in person") is available beginning several weeks before Election Day at your county's absentee election manager's office. Alabama also offers absentee voting by mail for voters who meet specific criteria, including being away from the county on Election Day, having an illness or physical disability, working a required shift, being a caregiver, or being age 65 or older. Polling places are assigned based on your registered address, and hours are typically 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Election Day.
